Kazbek in January

As it happened, I spent this New Year in Gudauri (there’ll be a separate post about that), and before heading back I thought: since it’s so close anyway, why not drive over to Stepantsminda and see Kazbek in January.

Kazbek is a dormant volcano, 5,034 meters high, located on the border between Georgia and Russia, not far from Vladikavkaz.

From the Stepantsminda side, Kazbek is seen from its eastern slope. But it is also clearly visible from the Kobi Pass, except that from there the view opens up from the south.
